Sports: Colleges and Universities

First of all, the United States is the only country in the world, to my knowledge, which requires that schools such as Harvard, Ohio State and Claremont responsibility to provide the public sports entertainment to take. We have a unique system that has no historical sanction, or used elsewhere. It is unthinkable that the University of Bologna, the oldest and most prestigious schools, to provide scholarships to illiterate soccer players so they could entertain the other cities in northern Italy, and it would be as absurd as well as the Sorbonne and Oxford, both in their own country.

Our system is an American phenomenon, a historical accident due to an exciting football games are played at Yale and Harvard and Princeton, and to a lesser extent, some of the other schools in recent years of the nineteenth century. If we had professionals with a public football entertainment, we would not have placed the burden of schools. But we were not professionals, so our school was given the work.

Second, the ideal American educational was re-launched, few want to burden them with responsibility for public sports entertainment. I certainly would not. But since, by quirk of history, it is so saddled, the tradition has become ingrained, and I do not see the slightest possibility to change it. So I will continue it as long as certain safeguards are installed. Categorically, I believe our schools will continue to be able to offer sports entertainment, even if the bodies responsible for the rest of the world it is released.

Third, I do not see anything wrong with a college or university offers training in a young man or woman who wants an adult life dedicated to the sport. My reasoning is two-fold: 1) American society has told you that sports is an important part of our

national life, very carefully, substantial financial support and the great media attention. How can you possibly ignore an important part of life in our school? 2) If it is permissible for young musicians and actors in our universities, and generous to give departments to do it, why is it not equally legitimate to educate young athletes and give them a stadium?

Fourth, because our schools have volunteered to serve as unpaid training ground for future professionals, and as part of the Lucky school a good reputation in sports are good for a lot of money on a semi-professional football and basketball teams are active, the temptation young men familiar with the game, but totally unsuitable for the Academic Work sites are overwhelming. We must seriously consider whether such behavior is justified by educational institutions. So they can explore the world on their own to give them room to grow and evolve independently.
